Beer 187/365 – Ballast Point Big Eye IPA

Style: American IPA

ABV: 7.0%

Purchased at: Sent to me in a trade

What makes this beer different: Very citrus tasting

Will I be drinking this again: mmm possibly, there are other IPAs I like better

Grade: B

5/14/2010: Okay I am starting to catch on to the fact that the brewmaster/owner of Ballast Point must really be into fish. I am too so thats cool with me. I actually own a stone-fish, which is the fish that appears on the label for Sculpin. They kind of look like Oscar the Grouch with spikes on this face. Very cuddly type of fish.

Very fresh IPA smell going on here, more citrusy hops than anything. Lots of hop flavor going on, mostly citrus, but almost as much pine sap flavor also. Again “piney” beers are not my favorite. A bit of pale malt makes an appearance, but not quite enough for my tastes. The moutfeel is a bit light, the finish is very hopey, and it sticks around for a good while. I prefer “crisp” quick hop jabs over long sappy 12 round bouts. Overall not bad, but not quite my thing.

Beer 183/365 – Ballast Point Yellowtail Pale Ale

Style: Kolsch

ABV: 4.6%

Purchased at:Ummm, Did I get this in a trade? Superbowl poll maybe?

What makes this beer different: Tastes A LOT like miller lite

Will I be drinking this again:Probably not

Grade: C+

5/10/2010: Again yet another beer than I cannot remember where I got it from? Regardless I am pretty pumped that the Pittsburgh area is starting to carry ballast point beer. They make some pretty good stuff (minus this beer).

When I smelled this, the first thing I honestly thought of was Miller Lite. Overall there is not a lot of taste, but the taste that I am getting isn’t very pleasant. Kind of watery. Sorry not a lot to say about this one as I was very underwhelmed by it. Not the best beer to follow up a Dark Lord with.

Beer 118/365 – Ballast Point Sculpin

Style: American IPA

Purchased at: The Library – Pittsburgh PA

What makes this beer different: Fruits and hops all over the place.

Will I be drinking this again: If I can find it again.

Grade: B+

3/6/2010: Today was the day of the big Pittsburgh Beer Tasting at the Library in the south side. So much good beer at the event. Ithaca Brute, Russian River Beatification, CL Smoke From the Oak, Pliny the Elder, New Glarus Iced Barleywine, Noreaster etc etc. Was pretty amazed at the beer here especially for it being the first ever beer tasting through BA. My favorite might have been the Founder’s Nemesis. So so good. Anyways staying true to having one full beer per day, I opted for the Sculpin. I didn’t even realize we got Ballast Point in Pittsburgh.

The smell is actually kind of fruity/citrusy, with a lot of hop action. Very bitter hop flavor, that finishes almost resiny. A good bit of fruit flavor, can’t quite put my finger on the taste. Not a lot of malt for the hops to stand on, maybe a dash of pale malt and thats it. Medium mouthfeel with nice carbonation. I am really starting to like DIPA’s, but IPA’s are still a work in progress.I like having a little more malt in my hoppy beer, but still a very solid beer. But if you are a “hophead” I am sure you will love it.

Picture of the day: I need to know where I can buythese balloons. Hilarious.
