Beer 205/365 – Sam Adams Winter Lager

Style: Bock

ABV: 5.8%

Purchased at: ummmm? I have so much beer stocked up that I have no idea where I got it all from

What makes this beer different: My first ever winter beer many many years ago.

Will I be drinking this again: Yes

Grade: B+

6/1/2010: Ugh still two weeks behind on updating. Everytime I think I have time to get caught up, something comes up. For instance last night I played goalie for my friends ice hockey team. It was my first time EVER playing ice hockey, so it was interesting. I played baseball all my life, so my glovehand was good. I also played goalie for soccer most of my life, so I had the angles down. But I had no idea how hard it would be to balance with all that equipment on. I think I lost 10lbs just from sweating. Anywho….

Sam Adams Winter Lager was one of my first ever winter beers when I was 21 (because I never touched alcohol before I turned 21 :X ). Figured its about time that I drink this before winter comes around again. The smell is malty with a little bit of cinnamon. The taste is pretty much all about the malt, cinnamon/nutmeg, and some earthiness going on (it seems that a lot of Sam Adam’s beer has this same flavor). Overall this is always a solid go to beer for the holiday season, or the middle of June whatever tickles your fancy.

Picture of the day: Oh no its a tie!.

Beer 46 – Penn Brewery St Nikolaus Bock Bier – Brewers Reserve

Style: Bock

Purchased at: 3 Sons

What makes this beer different: Not sure its just damn good

Will I be drinking this again: I would like to but unfortunately Penn Brewery shut down.

Grade: A

12/24/2009: Penn Brewery is one of two excellent craft breweries in my home city of Pittsburgh; the other being East End Brewing. Penn had some money problems earlier this year that caused them to shut down their restaurant, and cease brewing on site. The beer brewing moved to a company outside of Wilkes-Barre.

Enough about the history and onto the beer. This stuff is REALLY good, especially for being a year old. You get hints of cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg, and finishes off with a strong caramel taste. All the flavors blend together perfectly. Hops are nowhere to be found. I really hope that next year Penn can get their money situation back in order so they can brew more of this stuff. If you come across this, buy it as it may never be brewed again.

Beer 30 – Atwater Winter Bock

Style: Bock

Purchased at: Vintage Estate

What makes this beer different: Watered down Caramel

Will I be drinking this again: meh probably not

Grade: B-

12/8/2009: Follow the advise from the hand on the label and stop before buying this one. Kind of tastes like someone squeezed cherries and squirted caramel dessert sauce into soda water.

Okay its not THAT bad, but really there’s just not a lot going on in this beer. It doesn’t have a lot of body to it, and its just under flavored. The taste itself is not that bad, there just needs to be more of it. Oh and less alcohol taste. It doesn’t do a good job of hiding its 7.5% alcohol content. It’s a shame because I have had a few beers from Atwater that were pretty decent.
