Beer 264/365 – Summit India Style Rye Ale

Summit India Style Rye Ale

Style: Rye Beer

ABV: 6.3%

Purchased at: Extra in a trade

What makes this beer different: About the only Rye beer thus far that I actually liked!

Will I be drinking this again: Yes I still have another bottle in the fridge

Grade: A-

7/30/2010: I thought Surly was the only decent brewery in the land of 10,000 lakes? Apparently I was wrong because it seems as if Summit knows what they are doing in the brewing department. Okay this is my first beer from Summit but it is pretty damn good, especially considering rye beer isn’t one of my favorite styles.

The nose is very spicy, with a charred caramel hint. The flavor is burnt caramel, roasty malts, some spice and a nice punch of citrus hops. This beer is actually pretty complex. Creamy and much smoother than anticipated. Light flavors but mix together nicely. The sum is better than the parts on this beer.

Picture of the day: Google is all knowing.

  1. The only rye beer you liked so far… I would be extra curious to see what you think about the Smuttynose Ry(e)an ale now.

  2. summit is a solid brewery but not very “hip.” a third great brewery from that area is new glarus. considering the trades you’ve gotten im surprised none of their offerings have been included. i’ve only tasted a few at gabf last year, but they were awesome (spotted cow & something red).

    • Danger,

I actually had the spotted cow a couple months ago! That and the road slush were very good beers. I have an iced barleywine in the basement which I will probably save for a special occasion. I have a friend who lives in wisconsin so I have him always keeping an eye out for three floyds/new glarus stuff. Thanks for the recommendations!

  3. I had this beer for the first time in late May. Really really good! Your assessment is right on the money. Have you had Bear Republic’s Hop Rod Rye? Also an outstanding beer!

    Cheers!

    • I had hop rod about a month back! Not a huge fan of rye beer but it was probably 2nd best behind this one.
