Beer 145/365 – Cuvée Van De Keizer Rood

Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale

ABV: 10.0%

Purchased at: Joe Canals – Bellmawr NJ

What makes this beer different: Hides the alcohol pretty well for 10%

Will I be drinking this again: Hard to find so probably not. But well priced for such a solid beer

Grade: A-

4/2/2010: Was excited to find this bad boy when I was in the dirty jerz for the AC beer show. I have the Cuvee blue from 2009 sitting in the basement, but haven’t tried this one until now.

The smell is similar to your typical BSPA, spicy, and yeasty. The taste has a lot of spice (black pepper maybe?), some caramel malts, and a bit sweeter than your average BSPA. Mouthfeel is very nice, but not nearly as carbonated as Duvel for instance, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The alcohol isn’t masked super well, but sometimes I kind of like a punch of alcohol. A lot of different flavors banging around in this one, all of which I cannot pick out exactly, but still very solid. If the flavors were a bit more subdued I might have given this an A.

Picture of the day: So I was raised catholic and it hurts me to post this but, how true it is.

  1. Hey, last night the friends and I went out and we got to a place called Beer Deluxe which had an awesome selection. My brother had the Rochefort 8 and I had a Sam Adams Boston Lager, which I liked.

    • Very nice! That is one of the best selling craft beers here in the US… Not one of my favorites but it is a decent beer for sure.

  2. This beer is immense !!
    Its in my top 3..

keep up the good work. I love the photos !

    • Hey he is still around haha.. How are things?

      • Hello matey.. I found this beer again the other night on a big session.. me and a friend finished a Magnum of 2008 Chimay Blue, a big bottle of the Cuvee Kaizer red, a big bottle of Omer, a big bottle of Straffe Hendrick (man that is a great beer), and a big bottle of Rodenbach Grand Cru. I was toxic the next day and he vomited. My worst hangovers are on this beer. Its truly lethal. Keep up your website. Definitely one of the best

        • Hey good to hear from you! Thanks for the compliment.

I still check your blog but to be honest it makes me angry… Only because I cannot get a lot of these awesome beers you are able to get your hands on! But your site is very well done as well.
