Beer 84/365 – Young’s Double Chocolate Stout

Style: Milk Stout

Purchased at: Vintage Estate – Boardman Ohio

What makes this beer different: Tastes like Guinness with chocolate added

Will I be drinking this again: Yes

Grade: B+

1/31/2010: I have passed on buying this beer for years, and I’m not quite sure why because I love stouts; especially chocolate ones. Regardless I finally bought a couple to give it a try. Plus you gotta love any beer that comes in a nitro can.

So much about this beer reminds me of Guinness. The head on Young’s Double chocolate stacks up like an upside down waterfall. Smell is chocolate and lactose (milk). Taste is not as sweet as I thought, and actually reminds me more of a Irish Dry Stout than a Milk Stout. A good bit of roasted malt here, and a little bit of chocolate. Maybe I am getting too accustomed to drinking over the top beers but to be the title “Double Chocolate” is a little bit of an overstatement. I would rename is Young’s Half Chocolate Stout. Mouthfeel is creamy just like a Guinness, but maybe a bit thicker. Overall a simple easy to drink beer, I just would have liked a little tiny bit more chocolate.

Funny Picture of the day: Not sure how some of these stores get away with these names

  1. This was probably considered a great beer 10 or 15 years ago but there are so many more now that are much better.
PS: Hey Drew, how come you are consistently three days behind on your drinking?! lol

    • Very good point Andy. The beer has been around for a long time, so it was probably considered “thinking outside the box” a decade a go.

Haha I am not behind on my drinking! Just on my updating. Busy freelancing a bunch of websites..

On that note not sure how far you are from Boardman OH, but there is a huge craft beer fest on April 24th. I will link you once I finish the website tomorrow.

  2. I’m curious to try a chocolate stout or something like that, never really had anything like it.

    • oh man you are missing out! chocolate stouts are where its at.

      • yeah, they sound awesome, haha. I’ll keep an eye out.

I need to find a proper beer shop or something.

  3. If you get the chance, try this beer on tap. In many cases the metal can can slightly alter taste.

  4. Hey, had this one from a bottle last night.

I liked it, but it wasn’t what I had expected at all. I’m not exactly educated on the subject, so it’s hard for me to pick out the tastes, but I could taste some chocolate, but I wasn’t expecting it to be as bitter as it was. I guess I was expecting a softer, sweeter taste, but yeah, I did like it.

I think I’ll need to try it again in a while, when I know more about what I’m tasting.

    • Oh man sorry to hear that Tom. I honestly don’t know enough about the brewing process but I have also noticed that most chocolate beers are more on the bitter side, and I think you have to use more bitter chocolate in beer or it spoils it. I doubt you guys will ever get this beer down there but its called “Ten FIDY”.. its probably the most milk chocolaty beer I have had yet. Maybe I will see what shipping charges are for a tiny box to the land down under and send you one.

  5. It’s not like I didn’t enjoy the Youngs, it was just different to what I was expecting. I did like it.

  6. Ok, had another bottle of this tonight and really enjoyed it a lot more than last time. I think because I know what a normal stout tastes like now, I could really pick up the interesting bits and could taste the chocolate a lot more.

    Really liked it.
