Beer 297/365 – Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale

Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale

Style: Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 6.0%

Purchased at: 3 Sons dogs ‘n suds – Wexford PA

What makes this beer different: One “hotter” pumpkin ales out there, also has a yellow squash type flavor.

Will I be drinking this again: Pretty average for a pumpkin ale, so probably not.

Grade: B

9/1/2010: Fall is hands down my favorite season. Pumpkin Ales, Oktoberfest’s, Hockey season starts, Football season starts, no humidity etc. I actually just stocked up on a ton of fall beer lately so keep your eyes out for a bunch of Pumpkin/Oktoberfests in the coming weeks. Anyone else think they come up with pumpkin beers a little too soon? I’m not complaining because I love the style, but a 90 degree day in the middle of August is not the time or place.

The nose has a lot of nutmeg in it, with just a hint of pumpkin. The flavor is very.. different? I eat a lot of yellow squash, and the flavor reminds me a lot of that, with a big punch of nutmeg, and some bitter hops. Its an odd combo of flavors, one sip I like it, the next sip I don’t. Not really a whole bunch of pumpkin flavor going on her, and the alcohol is pretty prevalent for a 6% ABV beer. All that being said it still is a pretty drinkable beer, medium bodied. I just wish the pumpkin flavor would be pumped up a bit, and the nutmeg scaled back a pinch.

Picture of the day: Keep your eye on the ball.

Beer 242/365 – Smuttynose IPA

Smuttynose IPA

Style: American IPA

ABV: 6.9%

Purchased at: Vecenie’s Distributing – Millvale PA

What makes this beer different: Not a whole lot, a typical IPA to me.

Will I be drinking this again: Solid beer but wouldnt go out of my way for it.

Grade: B+

7/8/2010: Wow this stuff has a TON of gunk floating around in this beer. Can you tell from the picture? Does anyone know if this is normal for this IPA? I have seen a little bit of this type of thing in IPAs before, but not THIS much.

The smell is very very crisp, hoppy and grainy. The taste is pretty nice. citrus hops, grapefruit hops, and a little bit grassy. This IPA actually gets a little bit tastier as it warms, which I find to be atypical for the style. Interesting. A little bit under carbonated, and medium body. Pretty solid beer but would not go out of my way to drink it.

Picture of the day: The recession affects all of us.

Beer 241/365 – Smuttynose Robust Porter

Smuttynose Robust Porter

Style: American Porter

ABV: 5.70%

Purchased at: Vecenie’s Distributing – Millvale PA

What makes this beer different: My first beer from New Hampshire! A lot of coffee and very dark for a porter

Will I be drinking this again: Yes

Grade: A-

7/7/2010: This beer was one of the few leftovers from my little get together for the UFC fights. I am actually surprised that this is my first smuttynose out of 241 beers. Its readily available in the area so not sure why I haven’t picked any up yet. Oh well.

This porter pours out darker than any porter I have ever had. The smell is all about coffee. The taste is much of the same, a lot of bitter dark roast coffee, with a dash of chocolate. Its a good thing I like coffee, because if I didn’t this would be a drain pour. There is a good bit of sweetness in the beer to balance out the bitter. A little bit of earthy hops makes an appearance also. Heavy mouthfeel for a porter. If you don’t like coffee avoid this one, but if you do you need to find some Smuttynose Robust Porter.

Picture of the day: A pretty amazing trick shot.
