What makes this beer different: About the only Rye beer thus far that I actually liked!

7/30/2010: I thought Surly was the only decent brewery in the land of 10,000 lakes? Apparently I was wrong because it seems as if Summit knows what they are doing in the brewing department. Okay this is my first beer from Summit but it is pretty damn good, especially considering rye beer isn’t one of my favorite styles.

The nose is very spicy, with a charred caramel hint. The flavor is burnt caramel, roasty malts, some spice and a nice punch of citrus hops. This beer is actually pretty complex. Creamy and much smoother than anticipated. Light flavors but mix together nicely. The sum is better than the parts on this beer.

Beer 249/365 – Surly Coffee Bender

What makes this beer different: The first coffee flavored brown ale I have ever had.

Will I be drinking this again: Yes I would love to. Might have to trade for it.

Grade: A-

7/15/2010: This technically is the last beer in my Surly Beer week, I almost forgot that I already drank the Abrasive Ale about a month ago. Description below.

This beer is our regular Bender beer with a cold-press coffee-brewing process. We steep 20 gallons at a time, so this beer will pop up at Tours, beer fests and special tappings. The coffee is roasted locally at Coffee & Tea Limited in Linden Hills.

I am a big fan of any coffee flavored beer, but this is the first brown ale I have had with such flavoring. My favorite coffee beer thus far hands down is Perkulator by Dark Horse. Coffee Bender might have just jumped into the #2 spot. The smell is french roasted coffee and sweet brown sugar. The flavor really reminds me of an iced coffee; coffee, creaminess, and just sweet enough. The mouthfeel from the oatmeal really helps this beer just as it did the regular bender. Overall I really like this Coffee Bender, but needed a bit more of a coffee punch to jump into my #1 spot for coffee flavored beer.

Beer 248/365 – Surly Furious

What makes this beer different: So bitterly hoppy, yet I still enjoyed it?

Will I be drinking this again: Won’t go out of my way for it, but it was good.

Grade: B+

7/14/2010: Beer #3 in the Surly beer week is their best seller; Furious. Didn’t realize this beer ranked so highly, but its in the Top 50 on Beer Advocate. Description below.

Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Wow talk about long winded ha. Anyways this might be the hoppiest smelling beer I have ever encountered. The flavor is an assault on your taste buds, tons of hops, and a bit of relief is given with the caramel malt. The hops are mostly citrusy, and a flavor that I really can’t put my finger on. Mouthfeel is somewhat full for an IPA, but I think its fitting for the flavor profile. I am sure hop heads absolutely love Surly Furious, and it is damn good, but a little too hoppy for me to “love” it.

Beer 247/365 – Surly Cynic Ale

What makes this beer different: One of the least funky/sour saisons I have ever had.

Will I be drinking this again: If it was locally accessible, but it wasn’t quite good enough to trade for.

Grade: B+

7/13/2010: Beer #2 for the Surly Week! Below is the description on the can.

Oh great, a fizzy yellow beer in a can, that’s just what the craft beer world needs! CynicAle melds Old World ingredients in a new school style. French malted barley, English oats and Belgian yeast create honey and black pepper flavors. Lively Slovenian hops provide the floral, apricot and peach notes. Toss your doubts away, toss one back and enjoy!

Gotta be honest, I’m not getting a lot of the honey/floral/apricot notes in the nose/flavor of this beer at all. Black pepper is there though! The smell is only mildly sour, but not too much so. The flavor comes of as something I would call a “Saison Light”. Grainy, slightly funky, but very drinkable. I get a little bit of fruit but can’t put my finger on exactly what it is. Well carbonated and very light for the style, and really doesn’t have that belgian creamy mouthfeel to it.

Will I be drinking this again: Yes, I will probably be trading for more of this.

7/12/2010: I figured I would start my Surly week off with a staple for the brewery; Bender. Instead of posting up some intro text to all these beers, I’m just going to post the beer description printed on the can itself.

Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Should be interesting! Oatmeal usually isn’t used outside of stouts/porters, but I am all for breaking the laws of beer. Bender smells brown sugary, and actually some coffee notes. There is a lot of flavor going on, but it still goes down very smooth. There is a fierce battle going on between sweet dark maltiness, and sharp hoppiness, but the oatmeal steps in and breaks up the fight. What I am trying to say is the malt/hop flavors are strong, but they are in perfect balance because of the smoothness that the oatmeal gives this beer. The mouthfeel is great, medium/heavy but super smooth and creamy. You need to find this beer.
